The Secondary Dominant
The Secondary Dominant
In this e-book you will learn everything there is to know about the secondary dominant, which is a great composition tool that can make a decent progression better and a good progression great.
It’s mostly found in Pop and Rock, but it’s also an absolute staple in Jazz.
In this lesson we’ll see what the difference is between a dominant chord and a secondary dominant. By looking at some examples of famous songs, it becomes clear how to use the secondary dominant in your own progressions.
You will also get familiar with the beautiful deceptive cadence using the secondary dominant and learn something about the diminished chord as a secondary dominant. After that we’ll see that the tritone substitution used as a secondary dominant works like charm as well.
In one of the last chapters we’ll look at the back cycle technique, which is typical for Jazz, but a great tool for pop and rock too.
