Learning Guitar - Roadmap

Learning guitar in 8 levels

The roadmap for learning guitar was published some time ago in a youtube tutorial. The roadmap itself was published in a PDF file on my patreon page (see the link below for free to download).

The roadmap is just an overview of 8 levels of guitar learning divided in 9 disciplines:

  1. Rhythm
  2. Chords and harmony
  3. Scales
  4. Technique and improvisation
  5. Picking technique
  6. Arpeggios
  7. Fingerstyle
  8. Theory
  9. Music reading

The PDF file is constanly maintained and being supplemented.
You can download the roadmap here:

About level 1

This is the entry level where you'll start to learn playing the guitar. You will learn your posture, basic techniques andgradually get acquainted with the different aspects that you will encounter when learning to play any instrument.

About level 2

After the entry level it’s time to level up and elaborate on the things you’ve learned in level 1. You are still learning the basics, but the things you play are more interesting and recognizable. In this level you’ll learn a few songs and your playing will benefit from the exercises and new techniques that you will learn in this level.

About level 3

In level 3 of playing guitar, you'll learn everything you need for playing many simple and intermediate Pop and Rock songs. You will also get to know more advanced techniques that are typical for the guitar. Everything you've learned in the previous two levels moves up a step.

About level 4

Level 4 of the Road map for learning to play guitar makes you an more advanced Pop and Rock guitar player and you’ll learn a little bit of advanced techniques that can be found in Progressive Rock and Jazz.

About level 5

In this level (and the next) of playing guitar you’ll go beyond Pop and Rock and lean towards Jazz, Progressive Rock and Fusion. The guitar techniques and music theory will expand to more complex concepts.

About level 6

Completing level 6 of the road map for learning guitar, makes you ready for becoming a beginning Jazz or
Fusion guitarist, with enough knowledge to start playing Jazz, Fusion and Progressive Rock.

About level 7 and 8

Level 7 and 8 are the highest levels in this QJamTracks road map for learning guitar. In these levels you learn the most demanding subjects, techniques and theory. Completing these two levels makes you a very complete high level and skilled musician with an infallible knowledge of music concepts. This doesn’t mean that there’s nothing more to learn beyond this road map. On the contrary, a musician will never stop learning…
